Objective

To provide kids with an engaging introduction to residential construction, covering basic concepts, hands-on skills, and the roles involved in building homes.

Program Components:

 Introduction to Residential Construction:

  • Overview Session: Introduce the concept of residential construction and its importance.
  • Tour of a Model Home: Virtual or actual tour of a model home to showcase different elements of residential construction.

Basic Construction Concepts:

  • Home Design: Learn about architectural plans and how homes are designed.
  • Building Materials: Introduction to common materials used in residential construction (wood, brick, drywall, etc.).
  • Construction Phases: Overview of the different stages of building a home (foundation, framing, roofing, etc.).

Hands-On Activities:

  •  Model Home Building: Use building kits or craft materials to create a simple model house.
  • Woodworking Projects: Build small projects like birdhouses or mini furniture using basic tools.
  • Plumbing and Electrical Basics: Hands-on activities with toy plumbing kits and simple circuits to understand basic concepts.

Learning About Trades:

  • Carpentry: Introduction to carpentry skills with safe, supervised use of basic tools.
  • Electrical Work: Simple demonstrations of how electrical systems work, including safe, hands-on activities.
  •  Plumbing: Basic plumbing concepts with toy kits and demonstrations.

Safety and Tools:

  • Safety First: Teach the importance of safety on a construction site, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Tool Handling: Safe handling and use of basic hand tools with guided practice.

Construction Site Exploration:

  •  Field Trips: Visit a local residential construction site or a home under renovation to see real-world applications.
  • Guest Speakers: Sessions with local builders, architects, or construction professionals to discuss their roles and experiences.

Creative Building Challenges:

  • Design Challenge: Create and present their own house designs or modifications to existing designs using craft materials.
  •  Build-a-Home Game: Simulate the construction process through interactive games or digital construction software designed for kids.

Final Project:

  • Group Construction Project: Collaborate on a larger project, such as building a detailed model house or creating a mini home exhibit.
  • Presentation Day: Present their final projects to parents or peers and discuss what they’ve learned.
